Nebulous Permadeath Mode Explained

Triple resources, one life—only queue it when your fundamentals are boring.

Permadeath Mode

Permadeath is Nebulous’s post-credit contract. After you clear the solo campaign once—25 levels, 5 Guardians, and the final boss—you can play with triple resources under a hard rule: one life. This page explains when to flip that switch, how the economy changes, and which soft-mode habits will get you killed.

Nebulous is a Roblox bullet hell by latent//state (permission from LostVolBytes), released 2026-06-29. It remains solo (maxPlayers = 1) while co-op, a level editor, and cosmetics are on the roadmap. Permadeath does not wait for those features; it asks whether your upgrade order, rocket discipline, and movement lanes already work.

Unlock requirements (plain language)

  1. Finish the campaign once in standard play.
  2. Confirm the permadeath option is available in the mode / difficulty select.
  3. Read this guide and Final Boss notes before you opt in.
  4. Join the Group for +15% resources so the triple multiplier sits on a stronger baseline (Group Rewards).

If you have not yet beaten Guardian 1 with rockets online, you are not in the permadeath conversation—return to Getting Started.

What “triple resources, one life” really means

Triple resources accelerates everything that was already true:

  • Faster access to damage, clip, reload, bounce, and rockets
  • Faster temptation to buy junk nodes because the wallet looks fat
  • Higher value on every loot block—and every death that drops your run

One life means scouting with your body is over. Soft-mode “die once to learn” becomes “learn offline, then execute.” Watch patterns from prior clears, farm with intent (How to Farm), and enter Guardians only at checklist green (Beat Guardians).

Pre-run checklist (print this mentally)

  • Sensitivity calibrated for L13-style circles (Controls)
  • Rocket buttons reachable on your device (Rockets and Items)
  • Group +15% active
  • Distractions off (notifications, chat popouts, “quick browser codes check” mid-run)
  • A shopping policy: combat economy first, vanity later
  • A tilt policy: after a close call, farm—do not revenge-queue the next Guardian blind

Promo codes, when they exist, are even juicier under triple income—but they remain unreliable. Keep expectations honest via the Codes Hub.

Spending under triple income

The priority list does not change:

  1. Damage
  2. Clip
  3. Reload
  4. Bounce
  5. Rockets / usable items

What changes is mistake magnitude. Buying early size/health/post-collection multipliers too soon wastes a multiplier that could have bought a rocket breakpoint before Guard 1. Conversely, hoarding forever is also wrong—unused currency does not dodge.

Practical rule: after each farm clear, buy the single upgrade that would have saved your last soft-mode death. Then stop shopping.

Farming rules unique to permadeath

  • Prefer known safe routes over experimental loot dives.
  • Open cores with rockets on L5 / L7 / L8 style stages—skipping opens to “save rockets” often costs more time in dangerous air.
  • End a farm the moment the bank covers your next gate; greed clears create late deaths.
  • If you chip into low health mid-farm, consider aborting the vacuum phase and banking what you have.

Movement rehearsals still count as farms: L10 wing/corner lure and L13 shield circles are legitimate prep even when the wallet is already full.

Guardian strategy changes

Soft mode teaches the patterns. Permadeath enforces them.

  • Guard 1 — no rocket? Do not enter.
  • Guards 2–3 — count rockets before the teleport into the arena.
  • Guard 4 — if the wing is not clean, reset the plan mid-fight by creating space; do not invent a new strategy at 10% hull.
  • Guard 5 — protect the circle radius like it is the life itself—because it is.

Detailed phase philosophy stays on Beat Guardians; this page only changes your risk tolerance.

Final boss under one life

Treat the final boss as a scheduled event:

  1. Full farm bank the day you are fresh—not at 2 a.m. on tilt.
  2. Recheck rocket charges.
  3. Enter with hydration and a clear desk.
  4. If you win, stop and savor; if you lose, write the phase name before queueing another attempt.

Triple resources make recovery runs faster, but only if you still have the nerve to play clean.

Psychological contract

Permadeath fails when players chase the multiplier without accepting the fear. Useful mental models:

  • Boring is skilled. Stable orbits beat highlight-reel dodges.
  • Information is cheaper outside the run. Watch, note, then play.
  • One upgrade per shop visit. Decision fatigue kills runs.
  • Session caps. Two serious Guardian attempts, then break.

Common permadeath myths

  • “I’ll just tank with health upgrades.” — Not if patterns hard-kill. DPS and opens still rule.
  • “Codes will bail me out.” — Maybe sometimes; not a plan (How to Redeem).
  • “Co-op will make this easier soon.” — on the roadmap, not now. Queue solo-ready.
  • “Triple resources means I can skip farms.” — It means farms are stronger, not optional at gates.

After a dead run

  1. Name the cause in one sentence (greed loot, missed open, bad radius, underfunded DPS).
  2. Fix that cause with one purchase or one drill.
  3. Do a short farm.
  4. Only then re-enter.

If you cannot name the cause, you are not ready to spend another emotional life—drill Controls instead.

Permadeath is Nebulous asking whether you learned the campaign or merely survived it. Answer with prep.
